Kangie

Another legendary trip finished! There is too much to tell, so I will just start by giving some statistics.

Methods of transportation taken:

  • Plane
  • Bus
  • Taxi
  • Rental car
  • Tram
  • Helicopter
  • Boat
  • Train

Places we’ve seen:

  • Rain forest
  • Coral reefs
  • Huge cities
  • Lovely countryside
  • Beautiful beaches
  • Hot and dry limestone filled desert

Animals we’ve seen:

  • Koalas
  • Kangaroos
  • Emus
  • No crocodiles… (although we did eat one at a restaurant)
  • Ibis
  • Dolphins
  • Peacocks
  • Penguins (very cute tiny little penguins!)
  • Lots of bats in the park at Sydney

Unexpected expenses:

  • Helicopter flight ^_^
  • Buying an extra air ticket after missing a flight -___-
  • Getting a parking ticket for parking at a wrong place -____-
  • Paying double for the parking ticket because it was easter -__________-
  • Eating out is twice as expensive as Japan!

I was pleasantly surprised by:

  • Grass!
  • Trash cans
  • Free public toilets
  • Friendly natives
  • The ‘no worries’ lifestyle, especially in Cairns and Perth
  • The price of food in the supermarket. Especially fruit is really cheap

That’s all I can think of right now. I’m really sleepy, so I’ll post more later!

Alive and kicking!

I’m a net cafe in Sydney right now, and I just finished looking up places to stay in Melbourne, Canberra and Perth, which are going to be our next destinations. Before we left I liked to keep the random element in our trip by not booking in advance. That did not turn out well. When we arrived in Brisbane it was good Friday and the start of a 3 day easter weekend. There was nothing available. Absolutely nothing. In the end we had to settle for a strange hotel, but it was a lot more expensive than the backpacking accomodation we could have had if we had booked earlier…

Too many things have happened to post here right now! Things we’ve done so far: snorkeling the great barrier reefs, a helicopter ride over the reefs (yeah!), going to the Kuranda rain forest, Brisbane, and now Sydney. The rain forest day was a bad luck day indeed. We missed the train in the morning by 1 minute so we had to wait an hour. Then in the afternoon we were supposed to catch a flight to Brisbane, but because the f*cking taxi company took 20 minutes to answer the phone and another 20 minutes to arrive with a taxi we missed our flight… We stayed at Cairns airport (which was very nice btw! better than a certain backpackers place I’m staying at in Sydney right now…), and went to the beach in the early morning to see the sunrise and do some swimming before finally taking the replacement flight to Brisbane.

Impressions so far:

  • A lot of nature. Grass is great. I really miss grass in Japan.
  • No worries
  • Rain forest is beautiful
  • Underwater camera worked
  • Despite what other people say, koala’s ARE cute
  • Christianity sucks. Every hotel is booked on easter, and every store is closed…
  • Many Japanese people in Cairns
  • Many Chinese people in Sydney
  • Sydney is beautiful at day, but dangerous and dirty at night
  • Brisbane is a very nice city. It reminds me a lot of Europe.
  • Cairns is wonderful. I recommend my parents to live there and chill out. They would love it.

More later :D

Australia!

I am about to leave for Australia! Well, that is to say, I am about to sleep, go to work, go to the airport and go to Australia. But it feels like I’m going already :S

Uh, that’s all. I’m tired. I’ll post pictures later. See you in two weeks :D

Busy!

Filed under: Daily Life, Travel — rheide @ 9:26

As life becomes more busy this blog becomes less frequently updated, so please bear with me for a while here. I haven’t abandoned blogging, I just don’t have time for it recently. Or in the near future. I will go to Australia in less than a week, so it might be difficult for me to update this blog for the next couple of weeks as well. At least you can be guaranteed that the next update should be a big one ;)

Our plan: too much to tell, really! Cairns, Brisbane, Gold coast, Sidney, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth. It’s going to be very very busy, and we’ll see a lot of things. I still regret that I can’t see Ayer’s rock, but I guess we’ll save it for another time.

Preparation is almost complete. Still need to book a rental car and perhaps some hotels, but I think we’re doing fine even without that. I wish I had more time to prepare, but recently work has been piling up on me, and things that I was never supposed to do, projects that I was never involved in suddenly require my attention just before I leave. I’ve got 3 days left, but today will be full of presentations so I won’t get much done. I might even have to come in on Saturday or Sunday to finish all my work… :’(

(almost holiday!)

Fiets in stukjes.

Fiets in tas.

A bad dream

I think it’s stress. I’m not sure. I’ve got a lot of things on my mind lately. None of them particularly bad, but most of it quite.. captivating. Work has never been this stressful. In my private life it’s been quite a while since I had to think about planning this much for a trip, and in fact I’m planning for two trips. And there’s always other unforeseen circumstances that make me worry more than I should. Sometimes I think it’s just better to let it all go and relax.

Last night, as I’ve been doing for the past couple of days, I turned off my air conditioning and my computer before I went to sleep. This means that my room is really cold in the morning, but with a good blanket it’s quite do-able, and probably more healthy. The room gets really quiet without the sound of those two machines. I used to love it. A completely quiet, pitch black room. Perfect to sleep in. Nothing to distract you.

Not anymore. I’ve gotten too used to having sound around me. It helps me focus, it helps me remember things I shouldn’t forget. Disconnecting all noise and all light means that my brain can completely relax, resulting in me forgetting things and clearing my mind. I dream a lot more in total silence. And I have nightmares, too. Last night I had one. I don’t remember what it was about, but I woke up covered in sweat. And I screamed. That never happened before. It scared me quite a lot.

So I’m trying to figure out what it is that made me scream at night. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the dream. Even though I don’t really remember it I’m sure that it wasn’t that scary. I don’t get scared easily (or at all), anyway. I figure it must have something to do with my waking life, and the only thing I can think of is stress. I don’t consciously feel stressed at all. I like my work, and there is the occasional stress moment, but I’m perfectly capable of letting it all go and relaxing once work is finished. Same for private life: I can put things into perspective and loosen my care about a particular thing. If I want to. I’m guessing though that recently all these things have been piling up in my subconscious, and finally they’ve found a good time to find their way out of my brain, which just happens to be when I’m happily enjoying a quiet nights’ rest.

I believe it’s a state of mind I can influence, though. I don’t need to feel stress, consciously or unconsciously. All it requires is flicking a switch in my mind. I switch I dare not flick because of the consequences of my relationship with people. In fact, I’ve been neglecting to hang out with some friends in favor of hanging out with other people recently. We haven’t done too much as a whole group of AK recently. To me, I feel as if I’ve reached my limit of social gatherings already, and I needed to choose some group to drop. I still love to hang out with small groups of friends, but hanging out in large groups is something I never enjoyed anyway, and I lost my will to be a part of the big group we usually have here. It’s one of the first things to drop in my mind, and it is indeed a healthy sign. Because it means that I have a lot of things going on besides work, and the usual group I hang out with. It’s not that I don’t want to join, it’s just that I lack the amount of willpower and brainpower (and awake-ness) to hang out a lot.

Let it all go.
